Various researches and clinical trials have been carried out on the p57 molecule. At first lab obese mice were used to conduct tests. Then overweight humans were subjected to a clinical study. More than $20 million has been spent on such projects. Fortunately the results have been positive. The human participants taking Hoodia supplement consumed about 1000 calories less in a day than those who were given a placebo. 1000 calories a day is considerable figure when you consider the fact that an average man consumes 2600 calories a day and an average woman consumes 1900 calories a day.

The patent granted to Phytopharm was for the extraction process only and not for the plant. Phytopharm is now working together with Unilever to develop a weight loss product containing the Hoodia p57 extract. However, their patent doesn’t allow them to claim that Hoodia product may actually help you in weight loss. As these claims have no scientific proof of its effectiveness till date. Yet you can see so many various products for weight loss available in the market, claiming to contain Hoodia.

The Bushmen of South Africa were the first to use to Hoodia Gordonii, they unaware that the extraction method of the Hoodia planet has been patent. They only realized that after they read through one such press release. A lawyer representing the San tribe filed a claim which said that the Bushmen deserved to a bounty of what was earned from the discovery and the patent. After all the plant is found in their land and they have been using it for centuries. A settlement was thus agreed with the Bushmen. It was agreed that, if the Hoodia gordonii plant proves to be the solution to various weight loss problem then they would be entitled to get their share of money. This would help build lives and improve the standard of living of some of the poorest people in world who are plagued with starvation, crime and unemployment.

At the end of the day everything may not be so rosy. It still remains to be seen as to if the extract would be successfully prepared and used to produce weightless products. These products should be proven safe to be used by humans, which require further testing. Unilever may think otherwise but there is still a long way to go before the Bushmen finally begin receiving any money for Hoodia Gordonii.
