Hoodia – Where Did This Miracle Plant Come From?

The temperature being hot and minimal supply of water is the ideal growing condition for the plant that takes about five years to mature. Having matured it takes a purple shade and has an awful smell, like that of rotten meat and tastes bitter.

It was just a coincidence, when the travelling people in 1937 came across the San tribe and found them chewing over identical substances, which was anything but food. Upon questioning it dawned that the plant they were chewing helps them to suppress their hunger and thirst, without any side effects and keeps them energetic at the same time. Much later in the 60s scientists and other experts started looking for the plant and its usage, and to the ill fate of science, they came across the sole molecule that was responsible in the 90s. It was then that they named the molecule in the Hoodia Gordonii plant as p57.

The method of extraction of this molecule had been patented by the laboratories of the South African Government, which was later on passed onto the Phytopharm Company in England. However, the plant still remains free from being patented after the license and patent were issued in the 1995 for the extraction of p57. It is very peculiar that among the several species of the Hoodia, only the Hoodia Gordonii species of Africa has the p57 molecule in it, responsible for the restriction of appetite.

There are certain regulations that have to be followed before any person could export the Hoodia Gordonii plant from South Africa. To have export authority it is essential that the people have the CITES certification from the government. Moreover, the shelf life of the product is unknown thus, it would be best to have it within 6 months of testing and packaging. Make sure that the dates on the independent reports of the supplements are similar to that of the packaging and on the bottles. Only after these verifications can you be sure that the product is the original Hoodia Gordonii from Africa.
