Do you know the side effects of using Hoodia?

Hoodia gordonii is a centuries old plant, found in the Kalahari Desert in South Africa. It has been publicized as one of the greatest discovery in weight products till date. The natives of the Kalahari Desert, the Sans have been eating this plant to survive in the Desert. The Hoodia gordonii is similar in appearance to a cactus and has helped the South African Bushmen cover long distances in the desert without food and water. Discovery of Hoodia Gordonii was widely reported in both print and electronic media, including 60 Minutes and Oprah's "O" Magazine. Everyone suffering from obesity was thrilled with this discovery and all the hype that followed.

According to present day reports Hoodia plant is believed to have no side effects. Lesley Stahl, a reporter for 60 minutes took a journey into the desert to find out whether those claims were true or not. She tasted this plant and claimed that she was not hungry or thirsty for remaining part of the day. She reported no after taste and no side effects. Her heart rate was also perfectly normal.

The San have been consuming Hoodia gordonii for centuries and they have not experience any side effects. It appears that the Hoodia Gordonii and its extract are safe for human use. However there is no published evidence to support this conclusion. Yet the companies selling Hoodia products are using the Bushmen as an example to support their cause. Moreover, no studies have been carried out to study the long term effects of using Hoodia gordonii on human beings, even though the Sans have used Hoodia Gordonii for a long time, they have felt no such effects.

The most important thing and the toughest part is extraction of its active ingredient. Pfizer made an unsuccessful attempt at trying to so. They failed and eventually gave up on the project. There are indications that Hoodia extract may damage the liver. It is still unknown how this extract would affect the body if the patient is taking any other mediation simultaneously.
The Bushmen were not affected from any common medical problems such as high blood pressure, depression and high cholesterol. They did not take any medicine for these problems. Therefore, Hoodia gordonii not having any side effects in the Bushmen is does not guarantee that no side effects will occur in normal people.

Clinical tests and studies need to be performed before Hoodia can be declared safe to use. Pfizer gave up on Hoodia gordonii due to the high extraction cost of the p57 molecule. Moreover, the cost of thorough testing by the FDA before being approved for use by public was also very high.
One of the possible side effects of Hoodia is the damage to the liver. If this is found to be true, it will not be possible for people affected by diabetes, to use it for weight loss. The hoodia plant contains a molecule p57 which leads the brain into believing that the stomach is full and the body does not require any more feeding. However, this could be lethal for people with diabetes as they need to maintain stable levels of sugar in their body. The Hoodia curtails both hunger and thirst. A few deaths have been reported to have occurred due to dehydration. After eating Hoodia these individuals never felt thirsty and so did not drink any water, causing their bodies to dehydrate.

Caution is advised when using a Hoodia based product or supplement. Anybody suffering from a disease or any other medical problem (especially liver problems) and pregnant women should avoid using Hoodia products.
